SpaceX, Lockheed Martin Among 12 Firms Chosen for Golden Dome Space Defense Program

TLDR

  • The U.S. Space Force awarded up to $3.2 billion in contracts to 12 companies for space-based missile defense systems.
  • Companies include SpaceX, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, and Raytheon.
  • The contracts are part of Trump’s “Golden Dome” missile defense plan, estimated to cost $185 billion total.
  • Companies must show working prototypes by 2028.
  • The Congressional Budget Office warns a full system could cost up to $542 billion over 20 years.

The U.S. Space Force has awarded contracts worth up to $3.2 billion to 12 companies to develop space-based missile interceptor systems. The deals are part of President Donald Trump’s “Golden Dome” missile defense program.

Space Force awarded 12 companies, including SpaceX, Anduril, Lockheed, Northrop, and Raytheon, contracts worth up to $3.2B to build Golden Dome space interceptor prototypes by 2028. The CBO has estimated a full interceptor network could cost $542B over 20 years. pic.twitter.com/PYaeRXBZKl

The selected companies include SpaceX, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, and RTX Corporation’s Raytheon unit, along with several smaller firms.

The contracts were awarded through a fast-track process. The goal was to reduce delays and keep multiple companies competing for future work.

Golden Dome is designed to expand the United States’ current missile defense capabilities. It would add space-based systems to detect, track, and destroy incoming threats before they reach U.S. soil.

Unlike existing ground-based interceptors, the new Space-Based Interceptor program places weapons in orbit. This allows the military to target enemy missiles earlier in their flight path, shortly after launch.

The Space Force said it awarded contracts to multiple firms to keep “contracting flexibility to award to the best provider.” This means no single company is guaranteed future work.

The contracts were handed out in late 2025 and early 2026 through the Space Force’s Space Systems Command. The agreements are for prototype development, not full production.

Prototypes Due by 2028

All selected companies are expected to show working, integrated prototypes by 2028. The technology is still unproven, and experts say that adds both urgency and risk to the program.

The full Golden Dome system is expected to cost around $185 billion. It would combine existing ground-based defenses with new satellite networks and orbital weapons systems.

However, cost remains a serious concern. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that a complete space-based interceptor network could cost as much as $542 billion over 20 years.

Defense officials have said affordability will be a key factor. If costs become too high, the program may not move forward in its current form.

Wall Street Watching Defense Stocks

Analysts on Wall Street are watching the defense stocks involved in Golden Dome closely. Among the companies awarded contracts, Lockheed Martin has received the most attention from analysts.

Lockheed Martin carries a Wall Street price target of $674.15 per share. That implies roughly 33% upside potential from recent trading levels, according to analyst estimates.

Northrop Grumman and RTX Corporation are also among the contract winners. Both companies have existing missile defense experience, which positioned them well for selection.

The Space Force also awarded a separate set of smaller Golden Dome contracts in November to build competing missile defense prototypes. Those deals are seen as a precursor to future contracts worth tens of billions of dollars.
